Freddie Grant’s Federal Charges Appeal Denied

Judges Affirm Freddie Grant’s Federal Charges Conviction

federal chargesOn Tuesday, June 3rd, three judges upheld Freddie Grant’s conviction on federal charges including possession of ammo as a convicted criminal.

Last April, Judge Cameron McGowan Currie sentenced Grant to 17 years in prison on the federal charges, based in part upon Grant’s long history of criminal behavior. Reportedly, Grant has been committing armed and violent crimes since he was 20 years old.  Grant was convicted of assault with grievous bodily harm, as well as possession with intent to distribute, before being convicted of kidnapping and murder.

On August 14th of last year, Grant pleaded guilty state-level criminal charges of kidnapping and murder related to the disappearance of Gabrielle Swainson. For those crimes, Grant was sentenced to 30 years in prison; this sentence is in addition to the federal charges for possessing ammunition.

Last spring Grant filed an appeal regarding the lengthy federal charges sentence. He is currently serving the ammunition sentence in a federal prison in Kentucky.

The three-judge panel from the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals considered the length of Grant’s federal charges sentence, including his court martial for the violent assault charges, committed while he was stationed in Korea.

“We agree with the district court’s decision to use Grant’s general court-martial convictions to classify him as an armed career criminal,” said the ruling.
