“Revenge Porn” Website Tycoon and Associate Arrested on Federal Charges
The former owner of notorious revenge porn website IsAnyOneUp.com and his hacker associate were arrested on federal charges on Thursday, January 23rd.
Hunter Moore, 27, and Charles Evens, 25, were arrested by the FBI on charges of hacking, conspiracy, and identity theft.
Until 2012, Moore ran a very successful revenge porn site that encouraged angry exes to submit nude photos of their former girlfriends. The site published the photos along with Facebook profiles and other information so viewers could contact the victims. Moore was consistently unrepentant, saying that he was legally protected because victims on his site could only go after the men who submitted their photos. Rolling Stone called Moore “the most hated man on the internet.”
Moore claimed that he had enough submissions to run the site for a long time, but in 2012 he abruptly sold the highly-profitable pornography website to the owner of an anti-bullying site who took IsAnyOneUp.com down. Rumors circulated that Moore dumped the site because, in 2011, the FBI began investigating claims from victims that Moore hacked their email accounts and stole private photos.
The rumors turned out to be true – Moore hired Charles “Gary Jones” Evens to hack into email and social media accounts. In 2011, Moore paid Evens $250 for nude photos of “6 guys and 6 girls.” The next month, Moore hired Evens to “hack all week” for him.
The hacking ended in May 2012 as the FBI investigation heated up.
Moore and Evens face 15 indictments on federal charges of identity theft, conspiracy, and hacking. They face up to 7 years in prison.
